Tomato (Commercial)

ZeoponiX Materials as Hydroponic Media

Theron Blazzard, owner/operator of the Blazzard Greenhouse as a cooperator grower tested three ZeoponiX growth media in the commercial greenhouse production of tomatoes.  The control medium was the standard mix used by the grower, a peat:perlite (85:15) mix.  The ZeoponiX materials were mixed into the standard mix at 25% by volume.  Each pot was a 5 gallon capacity black plastic bag with side drain holes.  Two plants,  6" to 7" tall, were placed in each pot on July 3, 1997.  Three replicates were used.  The tomato "Trust" was used. All plants received the same standard hydroponic fertigation and watering.  Plant height was measured on July 11, 1997 and July 29, 1997.  The number of tomatoes and the number of clusters were measured on August 16, 1997.

On October 8, 1997 the test was terminated and the number of ripe and green tomatoes and their weight were measured.  Vine length and weight were also measured.  Early test termination was due to other production schedules in the greenhouse.
All of the ZeoponiX media outperformed the control in terms of amount of fruit per plant, both in terms of number of tomatoes and the overall weight of tomatoes.  ZeoponiX materials produced 2-3 times the number of ripe tomatoes.  All of the amended treatments were faster developing, producing ripe tomatoes quicker.
