Marigold (Flo 3.1) -  4" Pot Production

Less fertilization needed with ZeoponiX materials to produce better plants

An experiment was conducted to assess the effects of selected fertigation rates on marigold performance in ZeoponiX amended potting mixes.  The marigold selected was the Excel Series F1 yellow.  A randomized complete block design with 6 replications was used.  The control consisted of a commercially available 3:1 peatmoss:perlite potting mix.  The same mix was used for the amended treatments where ZeoponiX material was added.  Three fertigation treatments were applied (0.5x, 1.0x, and 1.5x) The normal (1.0x) formulation was 200 ml of 200 ppm N as 20-10-20 fertilizer plus micronutrients applied once per  week.  (0.5x was 100 ppm and 1.5x was 300 ppm).

Marigold starter plugs were transplanted into 4"pots containing 0.5 liter of test media on November 16, 1996 and placed in the greenhouse.  On December 23, 1996 (6 weeks) plants had reached first full bloom stage when plant measurements and quality ratings were determined.
This experiment demonstrated that ZeoponiX media can be used to produce high quality marigolds using little or no supplemental fertigation.  When using no fertigation, marigold subjective quality ratings were similar to those grown in control media receiving a 1x fertigation rate.  A 0.5x fertigation rate resulted in superior marigold quality related to the conventionally fertilized controls.
